Dehere was talented and consistent as a juvenile, but although those qualities were enough to gain him the championship of the American juvenile division, there were questions as to just how well he actually stacked up against two other members of his crop. One was Holy Bull, who foreshadowed his Horse of the Year season in 1994 with a front-running defeat of Dehere in the Futurity Stakes (USA-G1); the other was Brocco, who administered a crushing defeat in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1). Dehere had excuses in both races, and he went on to defeat eventual Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winner Go for Gin in the 1993 Fountain of Youth Stakes (USA-G2) but was forced into retirement by injury not long afterward. He did fairly well at stud without approaching the top level.
Race record
9 starts, 6 wins, 2 seconds, 0 thirds, US$723,712
1993:
1994:
Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 2-year-old male (1993)
Assessments
Co-highweighted with Brocco at 126 pounds atop the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile males of 1993, 1 pound above Holy Bull.
Rated at 120 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1994, 10 pounds below divisional champion and Horse of the Year Holy Bull.
As an individual
A bay colt, Dehere had the strong body and short cannons typical of the Northern Dancer tribe and the powerful hindquarters and low-headed running style of his maternal grandsire Secretariat. He bled heavily when off Lasix in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, though any tendencies toward bleeding may have been aggravated by smoke from area wildfires. As a stallion, he was easy to handle.
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Dehere sired 986 winners (57.5%) and 80 stakes winners (4.7%) from 1714 named foals.

Fun facts
- Dehere was named in honor of basketball star Terry Dehere.
- Dehere became only the third horse in history to sweep Saratoga’s most important long-running 2-year-old stakes (the Saratoga Special, the Sanford Stakes, and the Hopeful Stakes), following Regret (1914) and Campfire (1916). The feat has since been accomplished by City Zip in 2000.
- At the time of Dehere’s death in 2014, his frequent rider, Chris McCarron, called him “the fastest 2-year-old I’ve ever ridden.”
