No angel in her demeanor, Dustwhirl never raced. Fortunately, she had more liking and aptitude for motherhood than for racing. She is primarily remembered as the dam of 1941 American Triple Crown winner Whirlaway but is also the ancestress of 1982 American Horse of the Year Conquistador Cielo.

Foaled in Kentucky, Dustwhirl was bred and owned by Joseph E. Widener. After producing her first three foals, she was acquired by Arthur Hancock, Sr., of Claiborne Farm. She changed hands again after the birth of her 1937 foal, the Sir Gallahad III colt Devil Red, and spent the rest of her life in Calumet Farm's broodmare band. Her last foal, a 1946 son of Bull Lea, was appropriately named Good Ending.

The female family entered the United States through the next dam in the tail-female line, the Donovan mare Berriedale, also the dam of stakes winners Inflexible (by Hamburg), Kinleydale (by Kinley Mack) and Donald Macdonald (by Sombrero).

- Warren Wright's acquisition of Dustwhirl for the Calumet Farm broodmare band was very well timed, for the foal she was carrying when he bought her for US$12,000 was Whirlaway, who earned US$561,161 on the track in addition to stud fees.
