A champion in his native Argentina, Endeavour II was brought to the United States with the International Gold Cup at the now-defunct Empire City track as his target. He failed to transfer his Argentine form to the United States, winning only once in North America and failing to earn black type there. Nonetheless, he received an opportunity at stud in Virginia, where he did well considering his lack of access to top-class books in terms of both quality and quantity.
Race record
24 starts, 12 wins, 5 seconds, 2 thirds, US$50,286 (including converted Argentine earnings)
1944-1947:
Honors
Argentine champion older male (1947/48)
As an individual
A huge, plain dark bay or brown horse standing 17.1 hands, Endeavour II had good all-around conformation and a straight, strong hind leg. In spite of his size and strength, he had a gentle, sociable disposition that racing writer Charles Hatton likened to that of “a fond collie dog.”
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Endeavour II sired 179 winners (66.8%) and 18 stakes winners (6.7%) from 268 named foals. He was an influence for stamina as a sire, and his progeny, while typically plain, were usually reasonably sound, big-boned and of good temperament.
Notable progeny
Big Effort (USA), Corn Husker (USA), Porterhouse (USA), Pretense (USA), Prove It (USA)
Connections
Endeavour II was bred by Haras El Pelado. Following his importation to the United States, he was owned by Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Persons, then in her second marriage; previously the wife of John Hay Whitney, she would marry Richarn Lunn in 1954 and Colonel Cloyce Tippett in 1960. Endeavour II entered stud in 1949 at Mrs. Persons' Llangollen Farm in Virginia. He died in June 1964 at Glenangus Farm, Maryland.
Pedigree notes
Endeavour II is inbred 4x4 to two-time English champion broodmare sire Chaucer, 5x5x5 to nine-time English champion sire St. Simon and 5x5 to Marco. He represented the third generation of breeding by Jorge Atucha's Haras El Pelado, which also bred his dam Himalaya and his granddam Partenope (by Perrier). Endeavour II's fourth dam Mystify, a foundation mare for Haras El Pelado, was one of a large number of horses exported to Argentina by James R. Keene. Mystify was the result of one of Keene's experiments in close inbreeding to his champion Domino, as she was by Domino's son Disguise out of his daughter Dominoes, also the dam of 1915 American champion 2-year-old male Dominant (by Delhi) and stakes winner Diversion (by Sweep).
Endeavour II's family has a fine history of success in the Argentine Classics. His dam Himalaya is a half sister to 1931 Premio Saturnino J. Unzue winner Spit Fire (by Silurian), dam of 1937 Polla de Potrancas (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) and Gran Premio Selección (Argentine Oaks) winner Hulla (by Hunter's Moon) and third dam of three-time Argentine champion sire Practicante, Argentine Horse of the Year in 1969 after winning that year's Gran Premio Jockey Club, Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) and Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini. Himalaya is also a half sister to Cenicenta (by Codihue), dam of 1955 Polla de Potrancas winner Chapineta (by Black Out), while Himalaya's dam Partenope is a full sister to Peñola, dam of 1924 Polla de Potrancas winner Anatema (by Asturiano).

Fun facts
- Endeavour II was recommended to Liz Persons as a stallion prospect by no less an authority than John B. Campbell, then the dean of American track handicappers.
- Endeavour II was so good-natured that he was stabled with the mares and yearlings at Llangollen Farm with no apparent deterioration of his manners.
