While Golden Bri was consistent, hard-trying, and good enough to place several times in graded stakes, she won such an event only once. This was in the 1995 Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1), which she won mostly on superior stamina as favored Serena’s Song (who had beaten her easily in the 9-furlong Mother Goose Stakes and would beat her again just as easily in the 9-furlong Gazelle Handicap, both Grade 1 events) proved not quite able to get the trip. Golden Bri never won another stakes race at any level and did not distinguish herself as a broodmare.
Race record
28 starts, 9 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds, US$516,282
1994:
1995:
Assessments
Rated at 111 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile fillies of 1994, 13 pounds below champion Flanders.
As an individual
A chestnut, Golden Bri may have encountered some physical issues as her race record after the Coaching Club American Oaks was marked by a long gap between her 3- and 4-year old seasons. She did not handle off going well.
As a producer
Golden Bri produced six named foals. All started and four were winners, but none earned black type and none of her daughters have earned any distinction as producers.
Connections
Foaled in Florida, Golden Bri was bred by John R. Franks. She was owned by Hilmer Schmidt, who purchased the filly for US$19,000 from the 1993 Ocala Breeders’ Sales August yearling sale. She was trained by John Kimmel. She was ridden to her Coaching Club American Oaks win by Jose Santos.
Pedigree notes
Sired by multiple Grade 3 winner Gold Alert (a son of Mr. Prospector), Golden Bri is inbred 3x4 to 1962 American co-champion 2-year-old male Raise a Native. She is one of only three foals produced from stakes-placed Princess Bri (by Briartic), a half sister to multiple Canadian stakes winner Axe T. V. (by T. V. Commercial). The next dam in the tail-female line is Princess Axe (by Majestic Prince), whose half sister Tesao (by Cornish Prince) is the second dam of Grade 3 winners Hot Novel and Legislator and the third dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Behrens.
Princess Axe and Tesao were produced from 1972 Golden Rod Stakes winner Cam Axe (by The Axe II), a full sister to 1971 Arkansas Derby and Ohio Derby winner Twist the Axe. Also a half sister to Avanti Girl (by Royal Levee), dam of Puerto Rican stakes winner High Galaxie (by Irish Castle), Cam Axe is out of Twisterette, a non-winning daughter of Swoon’s Son.
Books and media
Golden Bri is profiled in Chapter 12 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
