Gulf Stream (GB)

1943 – 1967

Hyperion (GB) x Tide-way (GB), by Fairway (GB)

Family 8-g

A three-quarters brother to 1945 English champion 3-year-old filly Sun Stream and two-time American champion sire Heliopolis, Gulf Stream was a better racehorse than Heliopolis—at least as a juvenile—but was not Sun Stream's equal. Exported to Argentina, he proved an excellent sire, leading the Argentine general sire list three times, but failed to establish a lasting branch of the Hyperion male line.

Race record

9 starts, 5 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds, £10,537

1945:
  • Won June Stakes (ENG, Newmarket)
  • Won Chesterfield Stakes (ENG, Newmarket)
  • Won Gimcrack Stakes (ENG, 6FT, York)

1946:

  • Won Eclipse Stakes (ENG, 10FT, Sandown)
  • 2nd Derby Stakes (ENG, 12FT, Epsom)

Honors

English champion 2-year-old male (1945)

Assessments

Earned a Timeform rating of 120 pounds as a 3-year-old.

As an individual

A bay horse standing 15.3 hands, Gulf Stream was considered exceptionally handsome. He had a beautifully laid shoulder, a deep girth, a short back and a good hind leg. He was courageous and determined on the race course.

As a stallion

Gulf Stream was the Argentine champion sire of 1955, 1958 and 1959 and was among the top 10 Argentine general sires on another eight occasions. He was also ranked four times among the top 10 Argentine broodmare sires.

Notable progeny

Anisado (ARG), Jubilosa (ARG), La Gloria (ARG), Mamboreta (ARG), Manantial (ARG), Manganga (ARG), Pipote (ARG), Riesgo (ARG), Satanica (ARG), Secion Secreta (ARG)

Connections

Gulf Stream was bred and owned by the 17th Earl of Derby. Following a winless 4-year-old season, Lord Derby sold Gulf Stream for export to Argentina. Gulf Stream stood at Haras Argentino. While records from Argentina are incomplete, Gulf Stream is known to have sired over 50 stakes winners.

Pedigree notes

Gulf Stream is inbred 3x4 to two-time English champion broodmare sire Chaucer, 4x5x4 to 1896 Oaks Stakes winner Canterbury Pilgrim, 5x4x5x5 to Chaucer's sire St. Simon and 5x5 to 1899 Ascot Gold Cup winner Cyllene. He is a half brother to Ebb and Flow (by Solario), dam of multiple stakes winner Torcross (by Torbido).

Gulf Stream's dam Tide-way (by Fairway) won the 1936 One Thousand Guineas and is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Fairhaven. She is also a half sister to 1945 English champion 3-year-old filly Sun Stream (by Hyperion), winner of that year's One Thousand Guineas and Oaks Stakes, and to 1939 Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Heliopolis (by Hyperion), a two-time American champion sire.

Drift, the dam of Tide-way, won the 1929 Caledonian Hunt Cup as a 3-year-old. She is a full sister to stakes winner Melanesia, third dam of Schwartzgold-Rennen winner Musketblute, and a half sister to Santa Barbara (by Sansovino), dam of 1945 Rothmans July Handicap winner St. Seiriol (by Caerleon). Drift was produced from Liverpool Spring Cup winner Santa Cruz (by Neil Gow), a half sister to the important Argentine sire Bridge of Canny (by Love Wisely) and to 1909 Newbury Autumn Cup winner Bridge of Earn (by Cyllene), who was a good sire in England, particularly of broodmares. The next dam in the tail-female line, Santa Brigida (by St. Simon), won the 1901 Yorkshire Oaks and is also the ancestress of champions or Classic winners Brown Betty, Menow, Alcibiades, Mid-day Sun, Shannon II and Sir Ivor.

Books and media

Gulf Stream is one of 205 stallions whose accomplishments at stud are profiled in Great Thoroughbred Sires of the World (2006, The Australian Bloodhorse Review), a massive reference work written by Jennifer Churchill, Andrew Reichard and Byron Rogers.

Fun facts
  • The Gulf Stream is a major current in the Atlantic Ocean which carries warm water originating near the southern tip of Florida up the eastern coast of North America before continuing northward and eastward as the North Atlantic Drift. It has a significant effect on weather along the eastern seaboard of the United States and southern Canada and in parts of northwestern Europe.
