Hail to Reason (USA) x Ellen's Best (USA), by War Relic (USA)
Family 1-o
Hail to All probably would have been a reject if he had passed through the sale ring, for he had a hind leg that was far from a thing of beauty. He could run on it, though, and outstayed tough little Tom Rolfe to win the Belmont Stakes. Unfortunately, he did not pass enough of his better characteristics to his progeny to make a significant reputation as a sire.
Race record
28 starts, 8 wins, 7 seconds, 8 thirds, US$494,150

Assessments
Rated at 119 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1964, 11 pounds below champion Bold Lad.
Rated at 127 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1965, 2 pounds below champion Tom Rolfe but tied with Kentucky Derby winner Lucky Debonair for second.
As an individual
A big, rugged bay horse with notably crooked hocks, Hail to All often seemed mentally unfocused when racing. He was generally slow to get into stride but could produce a long, sustained run. He stood 16.2 hands and had an excellent shoulder; his knees and hocks were well let down.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Hail to All sired 78 winners (72.2%) and eight stakes winners (7.4%) from 108 named foals; none of his foals were anything close to him in ability. His biggest winner was Visier, who won 12 stakes races but no graded events.
Connections
Foaled in Florida, Hail to All was bred and owned by Zelda Cohen, the wife of Pimlico Race Course secretary-treasurer Ben Cohen. He was trained by Eddie Yowell, who also trained 1971 Belmont Stakes winner Pass Catcher.
Pedigree notes
Hail to All is inbred 5x3x5 to the immortal Man o' War and 5x5 to 1923 French champion sire Teddy. He is a half brother to Ro Dear (by Colonel Mike), dam of stakes winners Dear to All (by All Hands) and Native Go Go (by Raise a Native) and third dam of Grade 3 winners Country Recital, Devil Diamond and Lasting Chance.
Ellen's Best, the dam of Hail to All, was closely inbred as both Man o' War and 1925 champion juvenile filly Friar's Carse appear 2x4 in her pedigree through the full brother and sister War Relic and Speed Boat. She is a full sister to War Age, who made 78 starts (winning 28) and became a stakes winner in spite of having a “diabolical” set of knees in the words of Daily Racing Form writer Charles Hatton. She is also a full sister to Individuality, dam of stakes winners Put On Airs (by Arrogate) and Sir Winzalot (by First Landing) and second dam of Grade 2 winner I Speedup, and to Findelen, second dam of Grade 2 winner Frampton Delight. In addition, she is a half sister to 1965 New Orleans Handicap winner Valiant Man (by Khaled) and to stakes-placed Khalellen (by Khaled), dam of Grade 3 winner Gold Plated Leader (by L'natural).
Ellen's Best and her siblings are out of stakes-placed Ellendale (by Bimelech), whose half sister Guard Ship (by Trace Call) is the dam of stakes winners Vivace (by Bull Reigh) and Big Noise (by Khaled). The sisters are out of The Sward (Sickle x Speed Boat), a half sister to 1940 American champion 2-year-old filly Level Best (by Equipoise) and to Swing Time (by Royal Minstrel), dam of 1953 Demoiselle Stakes winner O'Alison (by Rosemont) and second dam of 1959 American Horse of the Year Sword Dancer.

Fun facts
- Hail to All was born with his left hock so crooked that he could not even walk. Corrective splinting straightened the leg to the point that the colt could run on it.
