Hawaii was the unquestioned champion of his generation in his native South Africa and earned another racing championship after being imported to the United States. Perhaps handicapped by his unfamiliar pedigree and his reputation as a pure turf runner while standing at Claiborne Farm, Hawaii was not a great stallion but compiled an honorable record as a sire of grass racers.

Assessments
Highweighted on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American turf runners of 1969, 1 pound above Czar Alexander.
As an individual
A bay horse standing 16.1-1/2 hands, Hawaii was "almost impossible to fault" per Richard Ulbrich's Peerage of Racehorses (1994, privately printed). He was a handsome animal with exceptional power in his hindquarters and gaskins and equally exceptional leverage from hip to hock but had pasterns that were perhaps longer and more sloped than ideal. His trainer, Mack Miller, described him as "a smart horse, a sound one, and a gentleman." He was unplaced in his one start on dirt.
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Hawaii sired 310 winners (54.8%) and 38 stakes winners (6.7%) from 566 named foals.
Notable progeny

Connections
Bred by A. L. Dell at his Platburg Stud, Hawaii was owned by Charles W. Engelhard, Jr., who purchased the colt from the 1966 National Yearling Sales for 9,000 South African rands (the equivalent of US$12,642) and campaigned him in the name of Cragwood Stable. He was trained in South Africa by George Azzie. When imported to the USA after his 3-year-old season in South Africa, Hawaii had a long and difficult journey by way of France and arrived in emaciated condition. He was trained by Mack Miller during his American campaign. Hawaii entered stud at Claiborne Farm in 1970 after being syndicated for $1.12 million and died there in 1990. He was buried at Claiborne's Marchmont division.
Pedigree notes
Sired by the Cesarewitch Handicap winner Utrillo II, Hawaii is inbred 5x4 to 1930 Derby Stakes winner and 1941 American champion sire Blenheim II. He is a half brother to William Penn (by Netherwood), whose victories include the 1964 South African Guineas and the 1968 Champion Stakes at Greyville. He is also a half brother to War Sprite (by Battle Hymn), third dam of 1991 Cape of Good Hope Futurity Stakes (SAF-G1) winner Bold Chieftain and South African Group 2 winner Al's Dancer. In addition, he is a half brother to Entrance (by Netherwood), second dam of 1993 Allan Robertson Bloodline Championship (SAF-G1) winner Fair Model and third dam of 1986 Computaform Sprint (SAF-G1) winner Military Song.
Hawaii's dam Ethane was named the South African Broodmare of the Year in 1967. A winner, she was sired by the Mahmoud horse Mehrali and produced from Ethyl (by Clondine), a good racer who won 13 races in South Africa. Ethyl, in turn, was produced from Armond (by Lomond), an unraced mare whose dam Arcola (by Sir Visto) was unplaced in her lone start, a maiden selling race.
