A 10-length winner of the Kentucky Oaks, Kathleen is generally considered the best American 3-year-old filly in an undistinguished crop of sophomore females. Her broodmare career was on a fairly similar level of merit, but she had little lasting influence on American bloodlines.

American champion 3-year-old filly (1916)
As an individual
In its Kentucky Oaks coverage, the Louisville Courier-Journal described Kathleen as “a handsome bay mare of an abundance of size and a daisy-cutting way of running.” She had high withers and a deep girth. She generally raced best when she could dictate the pace.
As a producer
In a career hampered by frequent barrenness, Kathleen produced only four named foals, all of which were winners. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Kathleen was bred and owned by George J. Long's Bashford Manor Stable. She was trained by Pete Coyne. She was sold to E. B. McLean as a 4-year-old and was trained afterward by John Schorr. She later passed to the ownership of Ral Parr during her broodmare career.
Pedigree notes
A daughter of the good English stakes winner Sempronius, Kathleen is inbred 4x5x5 to 1852 dual English Classic winner and seven-time English champion sire Stockwell. She is a half sister to Asia (by Sain), dam of juvenile stakes winner Orientalist (by Wise Counsellor), and to Manon (by Sain), second dam of multiple stakes winners Three Dots (by Good Advice) and Three Percent (by Percentage). Kathleen's dam Boema is out of the Alarm mare Espanola, whose full sister Espanita produced 1899 Kentucky Derby winner Manuel (by Bob Miles).
Books and media
Kathleen is profiled in Chapter 4 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
