A member of a vintage crop, Mate was just behind the very best of his generation in raw ability and exceeded them in toughness, soundness and durability. While he proved an indifferent sire, he passed his best qualities on to his son Elkridge, a two-time American champion steeplechaser and a member of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame.

Connections

Pedigree notes
Mate is inbred 4x5x5 to nine-time English champion sire St. Simon, 5x5x5 to 1887 English champion sire Hampton and 5x5 to 1880 Derby Stakes winner Bend Or. Sired by Prince Pal, an indifferent son of two-time Ascot Gold Cup winner Prince Palatine, he is a full brother to Kaka, third dam of two-time Vanity Handicap winner Annie-Lu-San. He is a half brother to 1936 Shevlin Stakes winner Gean Canach (by St. Germans) and 1941 Vanity Handicap winner Painted Veil (by Blue Larkspur), dam of stakes winners Mohammedan (by Mahmoud) and Tulyars Veil (by Tulyar) and second dam of stakes winners Blue Serenade, Carnival Boy and Visier.
Mate's dam Killashandra was stakes-placed in a minor event. Her dam The Banshee (by the Melton horse His Majesty) won the Phoenix Plate in Ireland but was of little account as a producer, and the next dam in the tail-female line, Bannagroe (by the St. Simon horse St. Aidan) was only a minor winner. Bannagroe, however, was a half sister to 1905 Irish Oaks winner Blakestown (by Lesterlin) and to Fairyland (by Lesterlin), dam of 1913 Irish Oaks winner Athgreany (by Galloping Simon) and granddam of the notable Irish taproot mare Athasi.

Mate is profiled in Chapter 6 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
