Arguably the best staying filly of her crop, Miss Cavandish was on the small side and had less than perfect forelegs but proved quite the race mare anyway. Unfortunately, she was a disappointing producer and left no lasting mark on her breed.
Race record
38 starts, 9 wins, 4 seconds, 6 thirds, US$346,106

Assessments
Rated at 109 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1963, 6 pounds below co-champion fillies Castle Forbes and Tosmah.
Rated at 127 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1964, 3 pounds below champion Tosmah.
Rated at 118 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American older females of 1965, 8 pounds below champion Old Hat.
As an individual
A plain chestnut mare standing 15.2½ hands at the end of her 3-year-old season, Miss Cavandish was pigeon-toed in front but had an excellent shoulder, a deep girth, and fairly straight hind legs with good leverage from hip to hock. She was a classic one-run stayer. She had a sensible disposition.
As a producer
Miss Cavandish produced nine foals, of which five started and three won. None of her four daughters were of any significance as producers.
Connections
Miss Cavandish was bred by Robert Kleberg, Jr., of the King Ranch. She was owned by Harry S. Nichols, who bought her at auction for US$1,500, and was trained by Roger Laurin. Following her racing career, she was sold to Tartan Farms. After producing seven foals, she was sold to Peter Blum for US$12,000 through the 1978 Ocala Breeders' Sales October mixed sale, covered by Hold Your Peace. She later passed to the ownership of Cecil Seaman. She was last reported as barren in 1987.
Pedigree notes
Miss Cavandish is outcrossed through five generations. She is a half sister to Daphne (by Heliopolis), dam of the minor stakes winner Foot Race (by On the Mark). She is also a half sister to Wiles (by Better Self), second dam of 1992 Fosters Melbourne Cup (AUS-I) winner Subzero and Australian Group III winners Bensynd and Confederate Lady. Wiles is also the third dam of 1982 Golden Slipper Stakes (AUS-I) winner and two-time Australian champion sire Marscay, 1990 Caulfield Guineas (AUS-I) winner Centro, Australian Group II winner Makara, and Australian Group III winners Ring of Flames, Proven Valour and Dr. Zackary.
Returning to Miss Cavandish, she is out of New Weapon, whose Better Self daughter New Family is the dam of stakes winner Backseat (by Jacinto). New Weapon, in turn, is a half sister to 1951 Washington Park Handicap winner Curandero (by Brazado) and is out of 1939 Santa Anita Derby winner Ciencia (by Cohort), a half sister to 1937 Lawrence Realization Stakes winner Unfailing (by American Flag) and to Holua (by Phalaros), dam of multiple stakes winner Incline (by Bold Venture) and the stakes-winning steeplechaser Hal Marbut (by Depth Charge).
Ciencia and her siblings were produced from the Star Master mare Science, a winning half sister to the high-class stakes mare Good Gamble (by Chance Play). The next dam in the tail-female lineage, Triangle (by Omar Khayyam), is a half sister to Florence Webber (by Peep O'Day), dam of 1926 American champion 2-year-old male Scapa Flow (by Man o' War), and is out of Delft (by Burgomaster), a stakes-winning daughter of two-time American champion Blue Girl.
