Native Charger was a good juvenile who could not get out of Bold Lad's shadow at 2, finishing second to the champion in three important juvenile events. He showed signs of becoming a very good 3-year-old but had not proven quite up to the best colts of his division before bowing a tendon while finishing fourth in the Preakness Stakes. He was a useful sire.

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky on February 25, 1962, Native Charger was bred by Hubert B. Phipps. He was owned by Albert Warner, who bought the colt for US$20,500 from the Saratoga yearling sales and raced him in the name of his Warner Stable. He was trained by Frank Metcalf. Native Charger entered stud at Mare Haven Farm near Ocala, FL, in 1966. In 1978, he relocated to Mare Haven Farm's Kentucky operation, where he was humanely destroyed November 25, 1990, due to the infirmities of old age.
Pedigree notes
Native Charger is inbred 5x4 to the champion English race mare and important matriarch Selene. He is also inbred 5x5 to three-time American champion sire Fair Play and 5x5 to two-time American champion sire Sweep. The last of 10 foals produced from his dam, Native Charger is a half brother to multiple stakes winner Greek Chief (by Ambiorix).
Native Charger is out of Greek Blond, a stakes-placed daughter of Heliopolis who was the best runner produced from the unraced High Quest mare Peroxide. Peroxide, in turn, is out of the unraced North Star III mare Blonde Belle, a full sister to 1926 Kentucky Derby winner Bubbling Over.
