He is out of Courbature, whose sire Flageolet won the 1874 Goodwood Cup and Jockey Club Cup before becoming the first horse foaled outside the British Isles to lead the English general sire list (a feat he accomplished in 1879). Her dam La Coureuse (by Stockwell) is a half sister to Sea Breeze (by Carnival), whose daughter Gillian (by The Rake) is the third dam of 1918 Preakness Stakes winner Jack Hare Jr.
