Had she done no more than produce the great Colin, Pastorella would have ensured her place in equine history. She did more, as her daughters Passan and Verdure wielded influence in the breeding programs of John E. Madden and Harry Payne Whitney.
Race record
1894:
As an individual
Pastorella's one extant photograph suggests that she had a deep girth but was rather upright in the shoulder and had her hocks somewhat out behind her. She was a chestnut.
As a producer
Pastorella produced 10 named foals following her importation to the United States. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in England, Pastorella was imported to the USA in 1898 by Marcus Daly, covered by Kendal. Following Daly's death, she was purchased from the dispersal of his stock by James R. Keene. She next went to Colonel Edward Riley Bradley's Idle Hour Stock Farm when Keene's Castleton Stud dispersed in 1913 and was later purchased by John E. Madden. Her last owner was R. T. Wilson, who bought the mare when she was 24. Unfortunately, Pastorella failed to produce a foal for Wilson before she died in 1918.
Pedigree notes
Pastorella is inbred 5x4x5 to 1834 St. Leger Stakes winner and four-time English champion sire Touchstone and 5x5 to two-time English champion sire Birdcatcher. Her dam Griselda (by Great Yorkshire Stakes winner Strathconan) was a modest winner out of Perseverence (by 1850 Derby Stakes and St. Leger Stakes winner Voltigeur), who also produced Energetic (by 1866 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Stakes winner Lord Lyon), dam of 1901 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) winner Ermak (by 1883 Grand St. Leger de France winner Farfadet). The next dam in the tail-female line, Spinster (by 1848 Two Thousand Guineas winner Flatcatcher), is a half sister to Mrs. Ridgeway (by Birdcatcher), dam of 1857 Two Thousand Guineas winner Vedette (by Voltigeur).

As a producer
Pastorella produced 10 named foals following her importation to the United States. Her important foals are as follow:
- Passan (1900, by Hamburg) produced five stakes winners: 1907 Criterion Stakes winner Lady Winifred (by Plaudit), 1908 Grand Union Hotel Stakes winner Edward (by Plaudit), 1911 Grey Stakes winner Aldebaran (by Planudes), 1916 Spinaway Stakes winner Passing Shower (by Ormondale) and 1924 Metropolitan Handicap winner Laurano (by Peter Pan). She is also the dam of Fox Trot (by Star Shoot), second dam of 1929 Preakness Stakes winner Dr. Freeland (by Light Brigade), 1931 Sanford Stakes winner Mad Pursuit (by Mad Hatter) and 1932 Pimlico Futurity winner Swivel (by Swift and Sure).
- Colin (1905, by Commando) is generally considered the 1907 American champion 2-year-old male and the 1908 American champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year. Unbeaten in 15 starts, he included the 1908 Belmont Stakes among his victories. He was subfertile as a stallion but nonetheless succeeded in continuing the Domino male line.
- Verdure (1910, by Peter Pan) produced 1920 Metropolitan Handicap winner Wildair (by Broomstick), sire of 13 stakes winners and 1947 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Potheen. She is also the second dam of multiple stakes winner Black Panther and of stakes winner Nida, dam of multiple stakes winner Little Miracle and second dam of 1954 Kentucky Oaks winner Fascinator.
