Peace Chance won the Belmont Stakes with an exceptional final quarter, leaving Preakness Stakes winner High Quest six lengths back in second, but he never raced again. He had previously been something of a hard-luck horse, having nearly been knocked down at the post of the Kentucky Derby, and did well to finish fifth behind Cavalcade in that race. His stud career was similarly marked by only one important contribution: he sired Arbitrator, whose daughter Almahmoud became a 20th-century foundation mare.

A bay, Peace Chance was strongly made with a good shoulder, clean legs and the long, flat muscles of a stayer. He suffered a career-ending injury while in training for the Arlington Classic and a possible rematch with Cavalcade.
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Peace Chance sired 172 winners (70.1%) and 10 stakes winners (4.1%) from 243 named foals. His best runner was 1944 Widener Handicap winner Four Freedoms, whose dam Nea Lap was a full sister to the great Phar Lap.
Notable progeny
Four Freedoms (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Peace Chance was bred and owned by Joseph E. Widener. He was trained by Pete Coyne. As a stallion, he was owned by F. C. Peters, who stood him in Kentucky at Hamburg Place. In 1946, Peters sold Peace Chance to the partnership of Bryson, Shea and Holly Beach, and the stallion moved to Maryland's Merryland Farm, where he died in 1951.
Pedigree notes
Peace Chance is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to Concordian (by Sickle), whose three stakes wins included the 1946 McLennan Handicap, and to New Dawn (by Sickle), dam of stakes winner Ariel Flight (by Castel Fusano).
Peace, the dam of Peace Chance, won once from nine starts. Produced from the Rabelais mare Memories II, she is a half sister to Memoria (by Mont d'Or), dam of the minor stakes winner Cant Remember (by Canter). Memories II, in turn, was produced from Wallflower II (by Meddler) and is a full sister to Reveries, dam of 1927 Clipsetta Stakes winner Reveries' Gal (by High Time). The female line traces back to the great 19th-century foundation mare Queen Mary.
Books and media
Peace Chance is profiled in Chapter 6 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
