Pippermint was the first horse to sweep the four races known as the Argentine Quadruple Crown—the Polla de Potrancos, Gran Premio Jockey Club, and Gran Premio Nacional (all restricted to 3-year-olds) plus the Gran Premio Internacional (later known as the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini), Argentina's most important race for open company. He had some success as a sire but was a better racer than stallion.
Race record
1902:
As an individual
A gray horse, Pippermint was well-balanced with an excellent shoulder and a strong, straight hind leg.
As a stallion
Pippermint led the Argentine broodmare sire list in 1932. He ranked second on the Chilean general sire list in 1913/1914.
Notable progeny
Papanatas (ARG), Pimponia (CHI)
Connections
Pippermint was bred at Haras San Jacinto by Saturnino Unzué and raced in the colors of Unzué's Caballeriza Escocés. He was trained by Edmundo Frazer. He was sold to a Mr. Samson for 4,500 guineas and sent to South Africa in 1903 but was later repurchased by Unzué to stand at Haras San Jacinto. His last foals were registered in 1921.
Pedigree notes
Sired by the good English stakes winner St. Mirin (a son of Hermit), Pippermint is inbred 4x5x5 to four-time English champion sire Touchstone and 5x5 to Ion. He is a full brother to Pimienta, second dam of French stakes winners Menthol and Picaflor.
Pippermint is out of Mostaza, whose Bend Or half brother Ben Strome sired the great American sprinter Roseben and was the American champion sire of 1903. Mostaza, in turn, is out of Strathfleet (by Scottish Chief), whose full sister Scottish Reel is the third dam of 1902 Irish Derby winner St. Brendan. The next dam in the tail-female line, Masquerade (by Lambourn) is a half sister to Buckstone (by Voltigeur), winner of the 1863 Ascot Gold Cup.
