Primicio (ARG)

1910 – c. 1920

Strathnaver (GB) x Atilime (ARG), by The Deemster (GB)

Family 8-j

Primicio won the Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) but otherwise was fairly unremarkable as a racehorse. He left nothing of significance in what appears to have been a relatively brief stud career.

Race record

Complete record unavailable

1913:
  • Won Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) (ARG, 2500m, Palermo)

As an individual

A bay horse; no further information available.

As a stallion

Prmicio does not appear to have had any significant impact as a sire.

Connections

Primicio was bred by Haras La Escocia. He was owned by Caballeriza Alcalá. His last foals were registered in 1921.

Pedigree notes

Sired by the Galopin horse Strathnaver, Primicio is inbred 4x4 to the Irish stallion Solon, whose primary accomplishment at stud was siring unbeaten Barcaldine. He was produced from Atilene, a product of Gilberto Lerena's Haras Viejo. She, in turn, was bred from the mating of the English imports The Deemster (a winner of the Coventry Stakes at Ascot before being shipped to Argentina) and Alyssum, a daughter of the Chester Cup winner Prism.

The next mare in Primicio's tail-female line, Aloara (by 1870 Middle Park Plate winner Albert Victor), is a half sister to Damoiselle (by Atheling), second dam of 1905 Irish Derby winner Flax Park. The sisters were produced from Allerion (by Chevron), whose half brother Castlereagh (by Speculum) was a good stayer who won the 1878 Great Yorkshire Stakes and Great Northern Handicap.

Fun facts
  • Primicio's name is the masculine form of the Spanish “primicia,” meaning 'firstborn” or “first fruits,” and alludes to the fact that he was the first foal produced from his dam.
