Purrán (ARG)

1893 – c. 1909

St. Gall (FR) x Alondra (ARG), by Earl Clifden (GB)

Family 3-h

One of the best racers of his generation, Purrán won two races now regarded as Argentine Classics. He was a better racer than stallion and had no long-term impact on Argentine breeding.

Race record

Complete record unavailable

1896:
  • Won Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) (ARG, 2500m, Palermo)
  • Won Gran Premio Jockey Club (ARG, 1800m, Palermo)

As an individual

A dark bay or brown horse, Purrán had a strong, well-made body and a well-sloped shoulder but was over at the knee.

As a stallion

Purrán had little impact as a sire.

Connections

Purrán was bred by Benito Villanueva at his Haras El Dorado and raced for Caballeriza Magna Domus. Beginning his stud career at Ignacio Correas' Haras Las Ortigas, he later stood at Haras San Agustín. His last foals were registered in 1910.

Pedigree notes

Purrán is inbred 4x4 to seven-time English champion sire Stockwell and 5x5x5x5 to four-time English champion sire Touchstone, both winners of the classic St. Leger Stakes (Stockwell also won the Two Thousand Guineas). In addition, Purran is inbred 5x5x5 to Stockwell's sire The Baron, 5x5 to two-time English champion sire Bay Middleton (who won the 1835 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Stakes), and 5x5 to two-time English champion sire Melbourne. He was sired by St. Gall, a good stakes winner who ran second in the 1885 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) and Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas) and third in the 1885 Grand Prix de Paris.

Purrán is a half brother to Corina (by Amianto), dam of 1906 Polla de Potrancas (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) winner Segura (by Simonside). His dam Alondra was produced from Ceres (by The Marquis), whose name was changed from “Queen of York” after she was imported to Argentina in 1881. Ceres' half sister Queen O'Trumps (by King of Trumps) is the third dam of 1902 Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Retz.
