One of the best of his generation in Argentina, San Martin won two races now considered part of the Argentine Triple Crown. As a sire, he was unable to assume the mantle of his sire Phoenix, the first great stallion in Argentine breeding history.

As an individual
A bay horse; no further information available.
As a stallion
San Martín was not a success at stud. He appears in South American pedigrees through a few daughters.
Connections
San Martín was bred by Guillermo Kemmis at his Haras Las Rosas. He was owned by Caballeriza General San Martín and was trained by D. Ruiz. He was active in the stud at least as late as 1902.
Pedigree notes
San Martín is inbred 5x5x5 to 1834 St. Leger Stakes winner and four-time English champion sire Touchstone and 5x5 to the great English broodmare Pocahontas. A son of six-time Argentine champion sire Phoenix, he was produced from Falka, a mare that Guillermo Kemmis imported from England in 1884. She is by 1873 Royal Hunt Cup winner Winslow (a son of 1863 St. Leger Stakes and 1876 English champion sire Lord Clifden) out of Wimmera, whose sire Young Melbourne (by two-time English champion sire Melbourne) fell in his only start but did well as a stallion. The next dam in San Martin's tail-female line, Ines, won the 1867 Yorkshire Oaks and is a full sister to the good juvenile stakes winner Saragossa, being by 1851 St. Leger Stakes winner and two-time English champion sire Newminster out of Barcelona, by Don Juan.
