Sherluck had an up-and-down record in 1961, and the key to when he was “up” seemed to be jockey Braulio Baeza; the colt won three of four starts with Baeza in the saddle but only one of 13 starts under other jockeys. His Belmont upset of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Carry Back probably owed much to superior stamina as well, as Carry Back did not really seem to stay more than 10 furlongs in spite of his late-running style. Sherluck failed to make any significant impact as a stallion.
Race record
26 starts, 6 wins, 1 second, 3 thirds, $239,176

Assessments
Rated at 109 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1960, 17 pounds below champion Hail to Reason.
Rated at 125 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1961, 1 pound below champion Carry Back.
As an individual
A dark bay horse standing close to 16 hands, Sherluck was leggy and rather lightly made, especially through the loin and flank. His shoulders were a bit heavy but were appropriately sloped and he had relatively short cannons. His pasterns were rather low and his feet were on the small side.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Sherluck sired 97 winners (44.3%) and four stakes winners (1.8%) from 219 named foals. None of his runners approached his own class.
Connections
Sherluck was bred in Virginia by Liz Whitney Lunn. He was owned by Jacob Sher, who bought him for US$10,500 at the 1959 Saratoga yearling sales, and was trained by Harold Young. After standing at Blue Ridge Farm in Virginia in 1963-1967 and at Ocala Stud Farm, Florida, in 1968, he was exported to France under lease following the 1968 Northern Hemisphere breeding season. He was sent on to Denmark in 1975. His last Danish-bred foals were registered in 1980.
Pedigree notes
Sherluck is inbred 4x4 to 1918 English Triple Crown winner Gainsborough. Sired by 1954 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Correspondent (a son of Khaled), he is a half brother to Black Pearl (by Persian Gulf), third dam of 1986 Premio Fernando Carlos Eleta A. (PAN-G1) winner Capuccine, Panamanian Group 2 winner Raise a Star, and Panamanian Group 3 winner Camaronera.
Samminiato, the dam of Sherluck, was sired by 1945 Derby Stakes winner Dante and is a full sister to 1951 Diomed Stakes winner Daneshill. She is also a half sister to 1949 Sussex Stakes winner Krakatao (by Nearco) and to 1958 Newmarket Oaks winner Chambord (by Chamossaire), dam of French champion older male Caro (by Fortino II) and third dam of 1986 Italian and Irish champion 2-year-old male Sanem, German Group 2 winner Carlton, South African Group 2 winner Shaybani and German Group 3 winner Cassis. Samminiato and her siblings, in turn, were produced from Life Hill (by Solario), a full sister to Irish stakes winner Northern Lights.
