A great champion in his native Argentina, Tatán swept his country's Triple Crown series as a 3-year-old and was also quick enough to win one of Argentina's most important sprint races, the Gran Premio Maipú. As a 4-year-old, he won Argentina's top races for horses 3 and up and also won events at the top level in Brazil and Uruguay. At the end of the season, he was widely considered the best horse of any age racing anywhere in South America. He was a successful sire in Argentina and the United States but was a greater success in his native country.

Connections
Tatán was bred by Edgar E. Striemer at his Haras Los Prados. He was owned by Caballeriza Los Cerros and was trained by Pedro González. In Argentina, he stood at Haras Comalal and Haras Los Prados. He was imported to the United States following the 1964 Southern Hemisphere breeding season and spent the remainder of his life at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky
Pedigree notes
Tatán is inbred 3x4 to Phalaris and 4x5 to Chaucer through 1928 St. Leger Stakes winner and four-time English champion sire Fairway and 1931 Eclipse Stakes winner Caerleon, both by Phalaris out of Chaucer mares. He is a half brother to Valdivia (by Foxhunter), dam of 1963 Venezuelan Horse of the Year and 1965 Equipoise Mile Handicap winner Tamao (by The Yuvaraj) and second dam of multiple stakes producer Vanita.
Tatán's dam Valkyrie was imported to Argentina from England. A non-winner in six tries, she is out of Walkure (by Caerleon), a useful racer whose three wins include the 1938 Epsom Handicap. Walkure produced nothing else of importance, but her Hyperion half sister Ortlinde produced English stakes winner Top “C” (by Chanteur II) and is the ancestress of 1969 Washington, D.C., International winner Karabas. The next dam in Tatán's female line, Brunhild (by Teddy), won the 1931 Prix de Royallieu and is a half sister to Forteresse (by Sardanapale), dam of 1933 Kentucky Derby winner Brokers Tip (by Black Toney) and stakes winner Billionaire (by Black Toney) and ancestress of 1972 Derby Stakes (ENG-G1) winner Roberto.
