Cleverly campaigned, Two Altazano for the most part avoided crossing swords with the topmost fillies in her division. Her connections’ strategy ended up netting her six stakes wins at six different tracks, including five “Oaks” races. The most important win of her season was her front-running score in the 1994 Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1), a race from which favored Inside Information was scratched. Two Altazano was not the same filly at 4 that she had been at 3 and was retired at the end of that season. She was a disappointing broodmare.
Race record
20 starts, 9 wins, 3 seconds, 0 thirds, US$709,725
1994:
Honors
Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame (inducted in 2003)
Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds on the Daily Racing Form’s Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1994, 8 pounds below co-highweights Heavenly Prize (the official divisional champion) and Lakeway.
As an individual
A dark bay or brown mare, she was described by National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame jockey Bill Hartack as “a nice filly with no bad habits.” She did her best racing on or close to the lead. She preferred fast tracks but could handle slop if it was not so deep that she could not get traction on the track base.
As a producer
Two Altazano produced eight foals, of which seven started and won. None distinguished themselves as either racers or producers.
Connections
Foaled in Texas, Two Altazano was bred and owned by Harold V. Goodman. She was trained by William Stice at 2 and through her victory in the Fair Grounds Oaks at 3 and by Michael Stidham afterward. She was ridden to her Coaching Club American Oaks score by Jose Santos. She sold for US$500,000 as a racing or broodmare prospect at the 1995 Keeneland November mixed sale. She spent her broodmare career as the property of William S. Farish III and William Kilroy.
Pedigree notes
Sired by multiple Grade 3 winner Manzotti (by Nijinsky II), Two Altazano is inbred 3x3 to the great Canadian sire Northern Dancer, a champion and Classic winner in both the United States and Canada during his own racing days. She is also inbred 5x5 to five-time American champion sire Nasrullah, also a champion on the English/Irish sire list. She is a full sister to Lucy’s Magic, dam of restricted stakes winner Joe’s Cannon (by Freespool).
Two Altazano is out of Purita U., who won the 1983 Clasico Eduardo Cautino Insua (considered a Grade 3 race in Puerto Rico). She is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Mine Tonight (by Upper Nile), dam of restricted stakes winners Minetonightsfirst (by D’Accord) and Pooska Hill (by Phantom Jet). She is also a half sister to stakes winner Synastry’s Maid (by Synastry), dam of stakes winner Tusko T. (by You and I)
Purita U. and her siblings are out of stakes winner Mardi Gras Maid, whose sire King of the Tudors (by Tudor Minstrel) won the 1954 Eclipse Stakes. Produced from the unraced Spy Song mare Verceuse, whose dam Hushaby (by Intent) won the 1963 Modesty Handicap, Mardi Gras Maid is a half sister to Clara Barton (by Run for Nurse), dam of stakes winner Anxious Arrival (by Seafood). She is also a half sister to So Sophisticated (by Quack), dam of stakes winner Sophisticated Lynn (by Clever Trick), and to Shamouse (by Sham), dam of restricted stakes winners Sham Topper (by Sparky) and Seattle Sham (by Manastash Ridge).
Books and media
Two Altazano is profiled in Chapter 12 of Avalyn Hunter’s American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).

Fun facts
- Although Two Altazano was regularly trained by Michael Stidham from April of her 3-year-old season onward, she was handled in the weeks leading up to the Coaching Club American Oaks by Bill Hartack, who had been working as a steward at the Fair Grounds but came to New York to give Stidham (a family friend of his) a hand with his filly.
- Two Altazano was Stidham’s first Grade 1 winner; his first graded winner had been the filly’s sire Manzotti.
- Two Altazano was honored with a stakes race for Texas-breds named for her at Lone Star Park. A stakes race named for her continues to be run at Sam Houston Race Park; as of 2020, it was carded for Yexas-bred 3-year-old fillies at 6 furlongs on dirt.
