Although he lacked the raw talent of his champion sister Desert Vixen, Valid Appeal was nonetheless a nice racehorse, especially in the slop. Given a chance at stud by owner Harry Mangurian, Valid Appeal became the premier sire for Mangurian's Mockingbird Farm, consistently throwing speed and precocity. He was also a good sire of broodmares.

Assessments
Rated at 112 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1974, 15 pounds below divisional champion Foolish Pleasure.
Rated at 118 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old males of 1975, 8 pounds below co-highweights Wajima (the official divisional champion) and Foolish Pleasure.
As an individual
A dark bay or brown horse, Valid Appeal stood 15.2 hands. He was a lightly made, quick-actioned horse with upright pasterns and a rather upright shoulder. He preferred running on or near the lead and was particularly effective on off tracks.
As a stallion
According to statistics kept by The Jockey Club, Valid Appeal sired 561 winners (69.3%) and 85 stakes winners (10.5%) from 809 named foals. His progeny generally came to hand early but trained on well in spite of Valid Appeal's tendency to pass on his own upright pasterns. Most of his foals were small to medium in size and fairly lightly made.
Notable progeny
K. J.'s Appeal (USA), Mighty Appealing (USA), Proud Appeal (USA), Stormy Appeal (USA), Stormy But Valid (USA), Successful Appeal (USA), Valid Expectations (USA)
Notable progeny of daughters
Big City Man (USA), Collect the Cash (USA), Exciting Story (USA), Freedom Cry (USA), Jersey Girl (USA), Nany’s Sweep (USA), Perfect Sting (USA), Splendid Blended (USA), Stormy Blues (USA), Sydney’s Dream (AUS), Trippi (USA), Val’s Prince (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Florida, Valid Appeal was bred and owned by Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. He was trained by T. F. Root. Following his racing career, Valid Appeal entered stud at Mangurian's Mockingbird Farm, where he stood his entire stud career. He was pensioned in the fall of 1997. Following the sale of Mockingbird Farm to Eugene Melynk in late 2001, plans were made for Valid Appeal to continue residence in his familiar stall and paddock, but the stallion went into a quick decline at the end of 2001 and was humanely destroyed due to the infirmities of old age on January 5, 2002. He was buried in the Mockingbird Farm/Tartan Farms equine cemetery.
Pedigree notes
Valid Appeal is outcrossed through five generations. He is a full brother to two-time American champion Desert Vixen, whose Group 2-winning son Real Shadai (by Roberto) was a champion sire in Japan. He is also a full brother to the minor stakes winners Court Trial and Classic Trial and a half brother to Desert Royal (by Rexson), dam of multiple stakes winner Royal Med (by Medieval Man; dam of multiple New Zealand Group 2 winner Millennium).
Desert Trial, the dam of Valid Appeal, was a good stakes winner at 3 and 4. She is a half sister to 1970 Monmouth Oaks winner Kilts n Kapers (by National; dam of 1977 Sorority Stakes, USA-G1, winner Stub, by In Reality) and stakes winner Memory Garden (by Bold Bidder). Desert Trial is also a half sister to stakes-placed Secret Verdict (by Clandestine), dam of Grade 3 winner Remote Ruler (by King Emperor) and stakes winners A Realgirl (by In Reality) and Secret's Out (by Royal Saxon). In addition, she is a half sister to Summer Legend (by Raise a Native), dam of Canadian Grade 3 winner Legarto (by Roberto) and stakes winners Lean Cuisine (by In Reality) and Nafees (by Raja Baba). The dam of Desert Trial, Scotch Verdict (by Alsab), is an unraced daughter of stakes winner Glen Arvis (by Attention), a half sister to stakes winner Iswas (by War Jeep).
