The first of three major American stakes winners named “Wistful” in the 20th century, the 1914 model achieved her primary distinction as the winner of the inaugural Coaching Club American Oaks. While she placed in other good races, she did not score any other major victories and was not an important producer.

Pedigree notes
Wistful is inbred 5x5 to 1863 St. Leger Stakes winner and 1876 English champion sire Lord Clifden. She is a half sister to 1923 Latonia Derby winner The Clown (by Hessian). Her dam Witfull won four stakes races as a 3-year-old and is a full sister to Responsive, dam of 1913 Ashland Oaks winner and Kentucky Derby third Gowell (by Ort Wells). Witfull is also a half sister to juvenile stakes winner Schulamite (by Plaudit), dam of stakes winner Responsful (by Meddler) and, through Responsful, second dam of stakes winner Legal (by Hilarious).
Witfull's dam Response is by the fine 19th-century racehorse and sire Longfellow out of Rena B., also the dam of multiple juvenile stakes winner Mazo (by Rossington). Rena B.'s sire Ten Broeck was one of the greatest American racehorses of the 19th century and was held in such high regard that one occasion the United States Congress adjourned early so that members could attend one of his races.
