A great-granddaughter of the epochal 19th-century matron Pocahontas, Castagnette established a distinctly American branch of Pocahontas' family. Her family was particularly influential in the Whitney stud, where her champion great-great-granddaughter Perverse became a notable broodmare in her own right.

Castagnette was bred by Isaac Newton Wallop, 5th Earl of Portsmouth. She was imported to the United States by David Withers, master of Brookdale Stud in New Jersey. Along with the rest of Brookdale Stud and its stock, she was sold to W. P. Thompson following Withers' death in 1892. There is no report of Castagnette after she was reported barren in 1896.

She is by 1853 July Stakes winner Marsyas out of Cachuca, making her a half sister to the Beadsman mare Duvernay, dam of the good English stakes winner Quicklime (by Wenlock). A daughter of 1850 English dual Classic winner Voltigeur, Cachuca is a half sister to 1864 Criterion Stakes winner Chattanooga (by Orlando) and to Nike (by Orlando), dam of five stakes winners. Cachuca and her siblings are out of the stakes-winning mare Ayacanora (by Birdcatcher), one of the marvelous brood of stallions and broodmares produced from the great 19th-century matron Pocahontas.

- A castagnette is the French name for a percussion instrument consisting ot two wooden disks that, when brought together sharply, produce a clacking sound. In English, the name is more commonly spelled "castanet."
