After the 2016 Longines Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1) turned into a wide-open race on the defection of 2015 American champion 2-year-old filly Songbird (who would go on to win the 3-year-old title as well), Cathryn Sophia came into a wide-open race as one of the favorites in spite of some questioning of her stamina. She won in solid fashion, cementing her status as one of the best sophomore fillies of the spring. While she proved no match for Songbird when the two faced off in the Cotillion Stakes (USA-G1) later that year, she was good enough to be a finalist for an Eclipse Award in the division. Rated the best Mid-Atlantic bred racehorse of the 2016 season, she is now a young broodmare.

Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds on the 2016 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for her performances in the Kentucky Oaks and Davona Dale Stakes, 18 pounds below overall highweight Arrogate (the American champion 3-year-old male and winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1) and 6 pounds below the top-rated 3-year-old filly on dirt, Songbird.
As an individual
A bay mare, Cathryn Sophia is a well-balanced, good-bodied, attractive individual with a great deal of presence. Territorial around her stall, she was highly competitive as a racehorse to the extent of being called “a spitfire” by her owner. (Trainer John Servis was blunter, calling her “just mean.”) She is known to be a cribber.
As a producer
As of November 9, 2021, Cathryn Sophia has only one named foal of racing age, the 3-year-old Pioneerof the Nile filly Mezcal, who has won one of her four starts.
Connections
Foaled at Chanceland Farm in Maryland, Cathryn Sophia was bred by Robert Manfuso. She was purchased by Chuck Zacney for $30,000 from the Fasig-Tipton Mid-Atlantic Eastern fall sale and was owned by Zacney's Cash Is King Stable. She was trained by John Servis and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks score by Javier Castellano. Following her racing career, Cathryn Sophia sold for US$1.4 million at the Fasig-Tiptom November mixed sale to SF Bloodstock. In 2017, Cathryn Sophia was consigned to the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November sale, in foal to Pioneerof the Nile, and sold for US$2.3 million to Bridlewood Farm (John Malone) and Don Alberto.
Pedigree notes
Sired by the multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter Street Boss, Cathryn Sophia is inbred 4x4x5 to two-time American champion sire Mr. Prospector. She is the first foal of the unraced Mineshaft mare Sheave, also bred by Mancuso.
Sheave is a half sister to listed stakes winner Taketheodds (by Street Sense). The sisters are out of 2001 Golden Rod Stakes (USA-G2) winner Belterra (by Unbridled), a half sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Royal Haven (by Hail Emperor) and to Havenlass (by Elusive Quality), dam of Grade 3-placed listed stakes winner Fight On (by Into Mischief). The next dam in Cathryn Sophia’s tail-female lineage, the unraced Shelter Half mare Cruising Haven, is a half sister to Grade 3 winner Admirallus (by Hail Emperor); to Tilt’n Sail (by To the Quick), dam of multiple Hgrade 3 winner Allijeba (by Bejilla); and to Stuffie (by Screen King), dam of restricted stakes winner Fantastic Buck (by Noble Novice).
