Like all the other American sophomore fillies of 2009, Funny Moon was overshadowed by Rachel Alexandra, who won three Grade 1 races against males and earned Horse of the Year honors. Nonetheless, Funny Moon was a talented filly who was able to capture a Grade 1 win of her own at 3 while avoiding the champion. Sidelined in August of her 3-year-old season, she came back to be a graded winner again at 4. She was retired after one unplaced start as a 5-year-old. As of January 2021, she has been a better racer than producer.
Race record
15 starts, 5 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds, US$530,900
2009:
2010:
As an individual
A chestnut mare with a deep girth, Funny Mood was a good mover with a very long stride when racing.
As a producer
As of May 24, 2022, Funny Moon has produced six named foals, All have started and five have won, but none have earned black type or produced any black-type runners.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky at Darby Dan Farm, Funny Moon was bred by the husband-and-wife team of Gerald and Caroline Stautberg, who sold her for US$175,000 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling sale. The purchaser was C. Wilson McNeely III’s Morrowdale Farm, and Funny Moon raced in the colors of Mrs. McNeely. She was trained by Christophe Clement and was ridden to her Coaching Club American Oaks triumph by Alan Garcia, who managed to get her straightened away and moving through the stretch after the filly tried to bear out on the final turn. Consigned to the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November mixed sale after being covered by Indian Charlie, Funny Moon was a US$2.3 million purchase for My Meadowview, the racing and breeding operation of Leonard Riggio. In January 2021, Funny Moon was consigned to the Keeneland January mixed sale and was sold for US$20,000. The purchaser was the Kern Lillingston Association, an international bloodstock agency.
Pedigree notes
Funny Moon is inbred 4x4 to 1962 American co-champion 2-year-old male Raise a Native and 5x4 to 1966 American Horse of the Year Buckpasser, a four-time American champion broodmare sire. She is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Throng (by Silver Deputy).
Funny Moon is a daughter of Fun Crowd, an unraced half sister to 1985 American champion older male Vanlandingham (by Cox’s Ridge), to Grade 1-placed listed stakes winner Jenkins Ferry (by True Colors), and to multiple stakes winner Popular Tune (by Stop the Music). The last-named mare is the dam of Grade 3 winner Top Hit (by Twining) and multiple restricted stakes winner Crafty Star (by Crafty Prospector) and is the third dam of multiple Grade/Group 2 winner Second Summer. Fun Crowd is also a half sister to Kamkova (by Northern Dancer), dam of multiple Grade/Group 2 winner Kirkwall (by Selkirk) and second dam of 2009 Moyglare Stud Stakes (IRE-G1) winner Termagant, and to Musicanti (by Nijinsky II), dam of 1999 Dewhurst Stakes (ENG-G1) winner Distant Music (by Distant View); second dam of 2008 Sprint Cup Stakes (ENG-G1) winner African Rose, French Group 2 winner Canticum, and French Group 3 winner Helleborine; and third dam of English Group 2 winner Calyx and English Group 3 winner Fair Eva.
Fun Crowd and her siblings, in turn, were produced from the winning Star Envoy mare Populi, a half sister to 1980 American champion 3-year-old male Temperence Hill (by Stop the Music) and to Canadian stakes winner Across the Channel (by Jean-Pierre). Produced from Sister Shannon (a winning daughter of the stakes-placed Owen Tudor horse Etonian), Populi is also a half sister to Andover College (by Affiliate), dam of stakes winners Saxon Cottage (by Our Native) and Well Aware (by Inverness Drive).
