Grand Daddy (USA)

February 6, 2006 – Living

Johannesburg (USA) x Love Style (USA), by Mr. Prospector (USA)

Family 1-w

Grand Daddy was not nearly as good a racehorse as his older full brother Scat Daddy, but a stakes-winning race record and his excellent pedigree were enough to win him an opportunity at stud in Chile. He has delivered, becoming a champion sire in his adopted country.

Race record

22 starts, 8 wins, 4 seconds, 2 thirds, US$151,669

2010:
  • 2nd Forego Stakes (USA, 6.5FD, Turf Paradise)

2012:
  • Won Forego Stakes (USA, 6.5FD, Turf Paradise)

As an individual

A chestnut horse, Grand Daddy has a good shoulder and exceptionally powerful hindquarters but is weaker through the body and loin coupling than was his full brother Scat Daddy. He has short cannons and is well muscled through the forearms and gaskins.

As a stallion

As of January 1, 2023, Grand Daddy has sired at least 16 stakes winners.

Sire rankings

Per El Turf (www.elturf.com):
  • Led the Chilean general sire list in 2020; 2nd in 2021; 3rd in 2016; 7th in 2017; 10th in 2019.

Per the Stud Book de Chile (http://www.studbookdechile.cl/):

Notable progeny

Big Daddy (CHI), Gran Carboncillo (CHI), Duliette (CHI)

Connections

Grand Daddy was bred in Kentucky by Robert Raphaelson. He was owned by Pattons Creek Farm and was trained by Thomas Drury Jr. He was exported to Chile at the conclusion of his racing career in 2012 and initially stood at Haras Mocito Guapo, later moving to Haras Santa Amelia.

Pedigree notes

Grand Daddy is inbred 4x2 to two-time American champion sire Mr. Prospector and 5x4 to the great international sire Northern Dancer. He is a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Scat Daddy (the Chilean champion sire of 2014 and 2015, and a successful sire in the United States) and a half brother to 2014 Shuvee Handicap (USA-G3) winner Antipathy (by A.P. Indy) and juvenile stakes winner Lovestruck (by Tapit). He is also a half brother to True Style (by Forestry), dam of Grade 2-placed stakes winner Classic Fit (by Bernardini). His dam Love Style never raced but is a half sister to stakes winner Grat (by A.P. Indy), dam of Grade 2 winner Old Time Hockey (by Smarty Jones).

Likeable Style, the dam of Love Style, won the 1993 Las Virgenes Stakes (USA-G1). A daughter of Nijinsky II, she is out of multiple listed stakes winner Personable Lady (by No Robbery), whose dam Porthole (by Gallant Man) is a half sister to stakes winner Visual Emotion (by King Emperor). Porthole is also a half sister to Lucy Sims (by Northjet), dam of Grade 2-placed stakes winner Tiffany Diamond (by Tiffany Ice) and second dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Include Me Out, 2010 Garden City Stakes (USA-G1) winner Check the Label, 2014 La Brea Stakes (USA-G1) winner Sam's Sister and Grade 3 winners Sweet Talker and Silver Medallion. Another half sister to Porthole, the Highland Park mare J. R.'s Lady, is the dam of multiple stakes winner Gilly's Ghazi (by Ghazi).

Fun facts
  • Grand Daddy bears the same name as an English-bred “nephew” sired by Scat Daddy out of Long Face, by Whywhywhy. A gelding, the “other” Grand Daddy placed twice from eight starts in France.
