A big, strong colt, Lear Fan was one of the best European milers of his generation. He went on to become a good sire and broodmare sire. Like a number of other strongly turf-oriented American sires, he gained much of his reputation from his European-raced progeny.

According to statistics kept by The Jockey Club, Lear Fan sired 537 winners (58.8%) and 68 stakes winners (7.4%) from 914 named foals; The Blood-Horse credits him with 84 stakes winners (9.2%). Lear Fan was particularly effective when crossed to daughters and granddaughters of Nureyev, another brilliant miler and a grandson of Thong, a full sister to Lear Fan's maternal grandsire Lt. Stevens.

Foaled in Kentucky, Lear Fan was bred by Constantine P. Karpidas. He was owned by Ahmed Salman, who paid 64,000 guineas for him as a yearling at the Tattersalls Highflyer sale at Newmarket. He was trained by Guy Harwood. Lear Fan entered stud in Kentucky in 1985 at Gainesway Farm and stood there until he was pensioned in October 2004 due to declining fertility. He died of natural causes on July 7, 2008, and was buried at Gainesway.
