Kitten's First showed some talent in her first start, winning a 7-furlong maiden special weight on the grass by a nose over the colt Check Ride, later a Grade 3-placed stakes winner. She never had the chance to fulfill that promise as she fractured a hip breaking from the gate in her next start, the Junior Champion Stakes at Monmouth. Spared from humane destruction at co-owner Ken Ramsey's insistence, Kitten's First survived but was left with a permanently narrowed birth canal. In 1995-2000, she managed to produce three live foals, but two more were born dead. After that, the mare's foals were delivered by Caesarian section. Kitten's First produced only three more foals before having to be humanely destroyed due to laminitis in 2006, but the hard-luck mare left a lasting legacy as a dam and granddam of champions.
