A good juvenile, Malathat blossomed at 3 to become the best filly of her crop. As might have been expected from her pedigree, she was at her most effective at distances from 9 to 10 furlongs. She trained on to retain her crown as a 4-year-old, sealing her title with one of the most hotly contested runnings ever of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (USA-G1). She is now a young broodmare.

As an individual
An elegant, lengthy, good-sized bay mare with an excellent walk and a long stride at the gallop, Malathaat has fine conformation overall with good bone. She had a tendency to wait on horses if sent to the front too soon and did best when stalking the pace. She has an excellent disposition and is fond of peppermints as treats.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Malathaat was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. A $1,050,000 purchase from the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale, she raced in the colors of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Stable (which continued racing under Sheikh Hamdan’s daughter, Sheikha Hissa, after the Sheikh’s death on March 24, 2021). She was trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden throughout her career by John Velazquez except for her second start, the Tempted Stakes, in which she was ridden by Kendrick Carmouche.
Pedigree notes
Malathaat is inbred 3x5 to Mr. Prospector. She is a full sister to 2022 Demoiselle Stakes (USA-G2) winner Julia Shining.
Malathaat and Julia Shining are out of 2012 Frizette Stakes (USA-G1) winner Dreaming of Julia, a half sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Dream Pauline (by Tapit) and to stakes winner Atreides (by Medaglia d’Oro). The siblings’ dam, Dream Rush (by Wild Rush), won the 2007 Darley Test Stakes (USA-G1) and Prioress Breeders’ Cup Stakes (USA-G1) and is a half sister to Adream (by Bernardini), dam of Grade 3 winner Song of Spring (by Spring At Last). Dream Rush is also a half sister to Eileen’s Dream (by Bernardini), second dam of Grade 2 winner Rhyme Schemes.
Dream Rush, in turn, is out of unraced Turbo Dream (by Unbridled). The next dam in Malathaat’s tail-female line, the winner Reve de Fee (by Mr. Prospector), is out of multiple stakes-placed winner Reine des Iles (by Nureyev), whose half sister Thelema (by Caerleon) is the dam of German listed stakes winner Themelie Island (by Montjeu).
