Miswaki (USA)

February 22, 1978 – December 17, 2004

Mr. Prospector (USA) x Hopespringseternal (USA), by Buckpasser (USA)

Family 16-g

A Group I winning-juvenile in France, Miswaki did not show quite the same form in the United States as a 3-year-old. In keeping with his fine pedigree, however, he proved to be one of Mr. Prospector's better sons at stud and was particularly noted as a broodmare sire. His best son, 1991 American Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair, was unable to continue his male line, but Miswaki will have an honored place in pedigrees for a long time to come as the sire of the great broodmare Urban Sea, whose son Galileo has been the most dominant European stallion of the early 21st century.

Race record

13 starts, 6 wins, 5 seconds, 0 thirds, US$232,887 (includes converted English and French earnings)

1980:
  • Won Prix Yacowlef (FR, 1000mT, Deauville)
  • Won Prix de la Salamandre (FR-I, 1400mT, Longchamp)
  • 2nd Prix Morny (FR-I, 1200mT, Deauville)
  • 3rd William Hill Dewhurst Stakes (ENG-I, 7FT, Newmarket)

1981:
  • Won Charles Hatton Stakes (USA, 6FT, Belmont)
  • 2nd Fall Highweight Handicap (USA-II, 6FD, Belmont)

Assessments

Earned a Timeform rating of 124 pounds as a juvenile.

Rated at 119 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American sprinters of 1981, 9 pounds below co-highweights Guilty Conscience (the official champion) and Dave's Friend.

As an individual

A well-made chestnut horse standing 15.3 hands, Miswaki was lengthy and somewhat short-legged for his height with a deep girth and powerful hindquarters. His pasterns were rather short and upright.

As a stallion

Miswaki peaked at second on the American general sire list in 1991 and was 10th in 1990; he was also second on the French general sire list in 1993. He led the English/Irish broodmare sire list in 1999 and 2001 and was fourth on the American broodmare sire list in 1999, seventh in 2003 and ninth in 2002 according to Thoroughbred Times' rankings. According to The Blood-Horse's American broodmare sire lists, he was second in 2009, seventh in 2003 and ninth in 2001 and 2002. According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Miswaki sired 717 winners (60.3%) and 94 stakes winners (7.9%) from 1189 named foals. The Blood-Horse credits Miswaki with 101 stakes winners (8.5%).

Notable progeny

Bachelor Duke (USA), Black Tie Affair (IRE), Etoile Montante (USA), Kistena (FR), Marvelous Crown (JPN), Misil (USA), Papal Power (USA), Umatilla (NZ), Urban Sea (USA), Waki River (FR)

Connections

Foaled in Florida, Miswaki was bred by Bruce Campbell and Early Bird Stud. He was owned by Etti Plesch. He was trained by François Boutin at 2 and by Woody Stephens at 3. He entered stud in Kentucky in 1982 at Walmac Farm and remained there until he was pensioned in August 2004; he died later that year. He was buried at Walmac alongside the graves of Nureyev and Alleged.
