​Northern Afleet was nowhere near being a great racehorse, but he was honest and hard-trying. As a stallion, he bequeathed those traits to his stock. He was never a fashionable sire, but he did beget three American champions and was a champion sire in Brazil.

As an individual

A bay horse, Northern Afleet was lengthy and muscular; he appeared slightly short-legged for his height. He had good natural speed. He was headstrong as a youngster but became more amenable to rating with maturity.


As a stallion

Northern Afleet was a versatile stallion and typically sired horses that were honest and willing as racers. According to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club, he has sired 975 winners (65.2%) and 77 stakes winners (5.2%) from 1495 named foals of racing age as of July 9, 2022.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Northern Afleet was bred by Hermitage Farm and was sold for US$40,000 as a weanling at the 1993 Keeneland November mixed sale; he was resold at the 1994 Keeneland September yearling sale for US$55,000. He was owned by Ron Waranch and Gregg Anderson. He was trained by Warren Stute and Vladimir Cerin before having his most successful season in the barn of Dave Hofmans as a 4-year-old. He entered stud in Florida in 1998 at Double Diamond Farm. In 2005, he moved to Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky. He began standing Southern Hemisphere season in 2007 in Brazil, where he stood at Stud TNT.

Sired by 1987 Canadian Horse of the Year Afleet, Northern Afleet is inbred 4x5 to two-time American Horse of the Year Native Dancer. He is a half brother to 1998 Gazelle Stakes (USA-G1) winner Tap to Music (by Pleasant Tap), dam of Canadian Grade 2 winner Bear’s Kid (by Lemon Drop Kid), and to listed stakes winner Boss Soss (by Sauce Boat). He is also a half brother to Cravatte Noire (by Black Tie Affair), dam of multiple French listed stakes winner Hamriya (by Alzao).

Northern Afleet is out of unraced Nuryette, whose Mr. Prospector half sister Cuddles won the 1990 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (USA-G1) and is the dam of Grade 2 winner Katz Me If You Can (by Storm Cat) and listed stakes winner Country Romance (by Saint Ballado) and the second dam of 2018 Mexican champion older male Igor and Grade 3 winner Cause to Believe. Nuryette is also a half sister to stakes-placed Augusta Springs (by Nijinsky II), dam of Grade 2 winner Buffythecenterfold (by Capote), and to Graphite (by Mr. Prospector), whose maternal grandson Bamboleo was the champion imported sprinter of 2008 in the Dominican Republic. Graphite is also the second dam of multiple French Group 2 winner Rajsaman and the third dam of 2008/2009 Australian champion 3-year-old male Whobegotyou and 2009 Prix Marcel Boussac (FR-G1) winner Rosanara.

Nuryette and her sisters were produced from 1983 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (USA-G3) winner Stellarette (by Tentam), a half sister to 1979 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly and 1990 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Kamar (by Key to the Mint). Produced from 1973 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Square Angel (by Quadrangle), Stelarette is also a half sister to 1986 Apple Blossom Handicap (USA-G1) winner Love Smitten (by Key to the Mint), dam of multiple Group 1 winner Swain (by Nashwan) and multiple French listed stakes winner Water Poet (by Sadler’s Wells) and second dam of Grade 3 winner Trafalger. In addition, Stellarette is a half sister to listed stakes winner Dancing on a Cloud (by Nijinsky II), dam of stakes winner Antitrust (by Affirmed) and second dam of Grade 3 winners Rich in Spirit, City of Weston, and Shadowless.
