A big, strong, rather late-maturing colt, Quadrangle was still not quite ready for the best of his division when he ran fifth in the Kentucky Derby. A month later, it was a different story. Relishing the Belmont distance, Quadrangle ended Northern Dancer's Triple Crown hopes with a two-length victory in the “Test of the Champion.” He went on to make a case for himself as the best stayer of his crop before going on to a successful stud career.

As an individual
A long, robustly made bay horse, Quadrangle appeared gangly and unfurnished well into his 3-year-old season before he finally grew into his big frame. His hocks were out behind him and his back was rather long. He had plenty of bone and substance. His temperament was placid and he was inclined to loaf when racing, especially when on the lead. He had a long, sweeping stride but was a surprisingly quick horse at the gate and handled off going well. He bowed a tendon at the end of his 3-year-old season and never quite recovered his form as a 4-year-old.
As a stallion
According to The Jockey Club, Quadrangle sired 193 winners (62.5%) and 25 stakes winners (8.1%) from 309 named foals.
Connections
Foaled at Rokeby Farm in Virginia, Quadrangle was bred and owned by Paul Mellon, who raced the colt in the name of his Rokeby Stable. He was trained by Elliott Burch. He entered stud in Virginia in 1966 at Blue Ridge Stud. He broke a leg in September 1978 and was humanely destroyed.
Notable progeny
Angle Light (USA), Smart Angle (USA), Square Angel (CAN), Susan's Girl (USA)
Notable progeny of daughters
Copelan (USA), Kamar (CAN), Love Smitten (USA), Tilt My Halo (CAN)
