Roi Normand (USA)

February 15, 1983 – February 20, 2007

Exclusive Native (USA) x Luth de Saron (FR), by Luthier (FR)

Family 22-d

Although he was a Grade 1 winner in the United States, Roi Normand was unattractive to American breeders. His primary credentials were as a staying, late-maturing turf runner, and the distaff side of his pedigree was completely European. In Brazil it was a different story, as he rose to the top of the tree there to become a five-time champion sire. Ironically, several of his Brazilian-sired offspring were imported to the United States and scored in graded races there, including 2000 American champion older female Riboletta.

Race record

17 starts, 5 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, US$393,454 (including converted French earnings)

1986:
  • 2nd Prix de Menneval (FR)

1987:
  • 3rd Prix Antipan (FR)

1988:
  • Won Sunset Handicap (USA-G1, 12FT, Hollywood)
  • Won Ark-La-Tex Handicap (USA-G3, 9FD, Louisiana Downs)

Assessments

Rated at 115 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American turf runners of 1988, 11 pounds below highweighted Great Communicator and 8 pounds below divisional champion Sunshine Forever (a 3-year-old).

As an individual

A dark bay or brown horse, Roi Normand had an excellent shoulder, strong coupling, a good hip and a well-constructed hind leg.

As a stallion

Roi Normand led the Brazilian general sire list for five consecutive years (2004/05 through 2008/09) and was runner-up in 1997/98 through 1999/00. He led the Brazilian broodmare sire list in 2016/17.

According to records kept by The Jockey Club, he sired 582 winners (52.4%) and 68 stakes winners (6.1%) from 1110 named foals. He is considered an influence for stamina.

Notable progeny

Ay Caramba (BRZ), Brazo (BRZ), Glaire (BRZ), Here to Win (BRZ), Innocent Kiss (BRZ), Magnum Opus (BRZ), Naturista (BRZ), Oferecida (BRZ), Pototo (BRZ), Redattore (BRZ), Riboletta (BRZ), Rizzolini (BRZ), Super Power (BRZ), Tutelada (BRZ)

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Roi Normand was bred by S.C.E.A. Haras du Mezeray. In the United States, he was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edmund A. Gann and trained by Robert “Bobby” Frankel. He was exported to Brazil in 1990 and stood at Haras Santa Ana do Rio Grande near Bagé, Brazil. He died of colic in 2007.

Pedigree notes

Roi Normand is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to multiple Grade 2 winner Trampoli (by Trempolino) and multiple French Group 3 winner Luth Dancer (by Blushing Groom). He is also a half brother to stakes-placed Gontcharova (by Zafonic), dam of French listed stakes winner Mashoor (by Monsun) and second dam of French Group 3 winner Lixirova, and to Cracovie (by Caerleon), dam of 2007 Prix Saint-Alary (FR-G1) winner Coquerelle (by Zamindar).

Roi Normand's dam Luth de Saron is by four-time French champion sire Luthier and was a good race mare in her own right, winning the 1980 Prix de Malleret (FR-G2) and Prix Vanteaux (FR-G3). She is a full sister to Lyre de Saron, dam of Grade 3 winner Ken de Saron (by Kenmare) and second dam of multiple Brazilian Group 1 winner Sal Grosso and Australian Group 3 winner Zanetta. Luth de Saron is also a half sister to Percussion (by Lyphard), second dam of 2000 Grande Prêmio Consagração (BRZ-G1) winner Omega Birth.

Luth de Saron and her sisters were produced from multiple Group 1-placed Rose de Saron (by Carvin II). The female line traces back to Federico Tesio's good broodmare Bunworry, dam of the Italian triple Classic winner Bernina and three-time Italian champion sire Bozzetto and a half sister to 1925 Derby Stakes winner Manna.
