South Ocean was about 10 pounds below the best Canadian fillies of her day but nonetheless was able to secure Classic success in the Canadian Oaks. She proved a great broodmare for E. P. Taylor's Windfields Farm, producing two champions, but in spite of her accomplishments was never named a Canadian Broodmare of the Year, perhaps because her champion son Storm Bird achieved his racing successes in Europe rather than North America.
