Family 2-s
Small and unimpressive as a yearling, Alleged made a much improved appearance when resold as a 2-year-old in training but still spent his early time in Vincent O'Brien's yard playing second fiddle to The Minstrel. He came to hand just a little too late to be prepared for the Derby Stakes (ENG-G1) or Irish Sweeps Derby (IRE-G1) (both of which The Minstrel won) but was the star of the fall racing season in Europe. While the more experienced Oaks Stakes (ENG-G1) heroine Dunfermline beat him a length in the St. Leger Stakes (ENG-G1)—the only time Alleged's colors were ever lowered on the race course—Alleged returned the favor at Longchamp when he easily captured the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (FR-G1) over the best Europe had to offer. He turned in a repeat performance the following year, becoming only the fourth two-time Arc winner of the post-World War II era. Sent to stud in Kentucky, he proved a reliable source of stamina.

Rated at 138 pounds by Timeform and at 140 pounds on the International Classification as a 4-year-old, again topping both sets of ratings.
As an individual
A bay, Alleged stood 16.1 hands. He was a well-balanced horse, rather plain in appearance but hard to find much fault with except for rather questionable knees. As a stallion, he had a nasty temperament and was known as one of the more dangerous stallions in Kentucky, though he mellowed a bit with old age. He was quite vocal with other horses and with people. He had a marked dislike for cold weather.
As a stallion
According to Jockey Club records, Alleged sired 494 winners (50.5%) and 94 stakes winners (9.6%) from 978 named foals; The Blood-Horse credits him with 100 stakes winners (10.2%). Alleged's progeny generally preferred distances of 10 furlongs or more and improved with maturity. They were better on turf than dirt, and many of his best made their reputations in Europe.

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Alleged was bred by June McKnight. He failed to make his reserve on a US$34,000 bid at the 1975 Keeneland July yearling sale and was privately purchased for US$40,000 by Monty Roberts shortly afterward. The colt next appeared in the auction ring at a 2-year-olds in training sale in California and topped the sale at US$175,000, going to Robert Fluor and Robert Sangster, who sent him to Vincent O'Brien for training. Sangster bought out Fluor's interest following Alleged's loss in the St. Leger Stakes. Following the colt's racing career, he was syndicated at a total valuation of US$16 million and sent to stud in Kentucky at Walmac Farm.
Pedigree notes
Alleged is inbred 3x4 to War Admiral and 5x3 to Princequillo. He is a half brother to Allegedly (by Sir Ivor), dam of multiple European Group 3 winner Per Quod (by Lyllos), Grade 3 Suspect Terrain (by Corridor Key) and stakes winner Supposedly (by Polish Numbers). Allegedly is also the second dam of 1994 Philip H. Iselin Handicap (USA-G1) winner Taking Risks and the third dam of Grade 3 winner Joes Blazing Aaron.
Princess Pout, the dam of Alleged, was a tough turf mare whose victories included the 1971 Benjamin F. Lindheimer Handicap against males. A full sister to Duchess of Malfi, dam of the stakes-winning French steeplechaser Decisif (by Vigors), she was also a half sister to Detangle (by Quadrangle), whose great-granddaughter Princesa Master was the champion imported 3-year-old filly of 2001 in the Dominican Republic.
Princess Pout and her siblings were produced from the Determine mare Determined Lady, a winning half sister to stakes winners Falling Evidence (by Prove It) and Proud Kenn (by Lt. Stevens). Produced from the War Admiral mare Tumbling, Determined Lady is also a half sister to Avalanche Lily (by T. V. Lark), dam of 1981 Japan Cup (JPN-G1) winner Mairzy Doates (by Nodouble) and stakes winners Blue Blood (by Round Table) and Avalanche Way (by Bold Forbes), and to stakes-placed Tumble Lark (by T. V. Fun facts
- A homozygous bay, Alleged sired only bay or brown offspring except for a few grays produced from gray dams.
- Alleged's iffy knees were a major reason he was campaigned in Europe, as his owners feared he would not remain sound if raced on dirt in the United States.
