One of the better sophomore fillies of 1987, Fiesta Gal was bred to stay and lived up to that breeding. She ran well in the spring and early summer but did not show quite the same form after a six-week layoff following her Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1) win. She was a disappointing broodmare as none of her five foals earned black type, but two of her daughters became stakes producers.
Race record
13 starts, 4 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, US$447,113
1987:
Assessments
Rated at 120 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American-raced 3-year-old fillies of 1987, 4 pounds below co-highweights Sacahuista (the official divisional champion) and Personal Ensign but third overall
As an individual
A huge bay mare with a long stride, Fiesta Gal was massively built. While inclined to be rather lazy, she would respond generously when called on by her jockey.
As a producer
Fiesta Gal produced five named foals, of which four started and two won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Fiesta Gal was bred by Bedford Farm. She was owned by Eugene Klein, who purchased her for US$275,000 from the 1985 Keeneland July yearling sale. She was trained by D. Wayne Lukas and was regularly ridden by Angel Cordero Jr. She sold to Arthur Appleton for US$1.5 million at the 1989 Keeneland November mixed sale, in foal to Alydar.
Pedigree notes
Fiesta Gal is inbred 4x5x5 to 1937 American Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year War Admiral, a champion sire and broodmare sire in the United States. Sired by the winning Bold Ruler horse Noble Commander, Fiesta Gal's dam Proud Pattie won six of her 36 starts. She is a half sister to Seximee (by Hasty Road), dam of 1974 French champion miler Nonoalco (by Nearctic) and Irish Group 3 winner Stradavinsky (by Nijinsky II); second dam of 1982 Prix de la Salamandre (FR-G1) winner Maximova, French Group 2 winner Navratilovna, and French Group 3 winner Vilikaia; and third dam of 1990 Prix de la Forêt (FR-G1) winner Septieme Ciel, 1994 Prix Marcel Boussac (FR-G1) winner Macoumba, and multiple Group 3 winner Maxigroom.
