Something of an underperformer in flat racing, Annapolis was very highly regarded as a steeplechaser although he won only one major event while racing “through the field.” Used almost exclusively as a sire of steeplechasers, he received only limited opportunities at stud but was noted for the exceptional quality of what he turned out, with his progeny including four national steeplechasing champions. Through his excellent broodmare daughter Accra, he is also the maternal grandsire of three-time American champion steeplechaser Neji and 1963 American champion grass horse Mongo.

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Annapolis was bred and owned by Walter Salmon's Mereworth Farm. In the fall of 1930, Salmon sold Annapolis for $16,000 to Mrs. T. H. Somerville, who had the horse put to steeplechasing under the training of Dr. H. P. Jones. As a stallion, he was owned by Marion duPont Scott and stood at her Montpelier Farm. His last reported season at stud was in 1953.
Pedigree notes
Annapolis is inbred 5x5 to 1887 English champion sire Hampton, a winner of the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup.
