After the previously unbeaten Morvich became increasingly unsound following his win in the 1922 Kentucky Derby, he left the leadership of the American sophomore division wide open. None of the other colts proved able to beat the others consistently, and the 3-year-old championship was pretty much a matter of opinion between Whiskaway (now considered the champion by consensus of racing historians) and Pillory, who each managed to secure two major wins. Whiskaway's primary claim to the championship is that he defeated Pillory in the Kentucky Special, their only head-to-head meeting. Like the other leaders of the 1919 crop, he was not a particularly successful sire.

Honors
American champion 3-year-old male (1922).
As an individual
A plain-headed chestnut horse, Whiskaway had the lengthy body and shortish legs typical of the Ben Brush line. He had a good shoulder, short back and long hip but was more impressive in front of the saddle than behind it. He was known as a sulker who would not always give his best.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Whiskaway sired 86 winners (56.2%) and 8 stakes winners (5.2%) from 153 named foals.
Connections
Whiskaway was bred and owned by Harry Payne Whitney. He was sold to C. W. Clark for US$125,000 after winning his first three starts at 3. Whiskaway was trained by James Rowe, Sr., prior to his sale and by G. V. Barnes afterward. His last registered foals were born in 1942.
Pedigree notes
Whiskaway is inbred 5x5 to 1875 Derby Stakes winner and three-time English champion sire Galopin. He is a full brother to stakes winners Flags and Initiate, dam of multiple stakes winner Novelette (by Strolling Player). He is a half brother to multiple juvenile stakes winner Panoply (by Peter Pan), dam of the steeplechase stakes winner and good steeplechase sire Annapolis (by Man o' War), multiple stakes winner Ladder (by Ladkin) and 1935 Schuylerville Stakes winner Parade Girl (by Pompey), ancestress of an important branch of Family 10-a. Whiskaway is also a half brother to the good stakes winners Crocus and Flagstaff, both by Broomstick, and to Forsythia (also by Broomstick), second dam of 1944 American champion 2-year-old male Pavot.
Whiskaway's dam Inaugural is a full sister to multiple English stakes winner Coronis, dam of stakes winners Circlet (by Whisk Broom II), Nusakan (by Sun Briar) and Aldershot (by Man o' War). She is also a half sister to 1926 Cambridgeshire Stakes winner Insight (by Oversight). Inaugural and her siblings are out of 1906 American champion 2-year-old filly Court Dress, a daughter of Disguise out of the Hampton mare Hampton Belle.
