Had it not been for Genuine Risk's heroics in the American Triple Crown series, Bold 'n Determined would have been the American champion 3-year-old filly of 1980. As it was, she had to be content to be the only distaffer to beat Genuine Risk during that season, a feat she accomplished in the one-mile Maskette Stakes (USA-G2). The ultra-consistent filly retired having won 16 of 20 starts but was only modestly successful as a broodmare.

As an individual
A feminine but tough bay mare, Bold 'n Determined could set the pace or come from off it. She was utterly game and tenacious when set down for a drive, though she had a tendency to loaf if on a clear lead. She had a mind of her own and wanted things her own way in interactions with humans. She was retired from racing due to problems with her ankles. She was fourth in her only race on turf, the 1980 Yellow Ribbon Stakes (USA-G1), but this may have been due as much to the wear and tear of a long season at the highest level as it was to the surface.
As a producer
Bold 'n Determined produced 12 named foals, of which nine started and seven won. Her only foal of importance was Happy Holiday (by Turkoman), winner of the 1994 Premio Marcos Lavalle (ARG-G2).
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Bold 'n Determined was bred by Dr. Gordon E. Layton. A US$12,000 purchase from the 1978 Keeneland September yearling sale who became a US$70,000 2-year-old in training when resold at Hollywood Park in 1979. She was owned by Corbin Robertson, who raced her in the name of Saron Stable. She was trained by Neil Drysdale and was most frequently ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, who had the mount throughout her 3-and 4-year-old campaigns. Following her retirement from racing, Robertson bred Bold 'n Determined's first seven foals before consigning her to the 1991 Keeneland November mixed sale. She was purchased for US$57,000 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Gainsborough Farm, which owned her for the remainder of her broodmare career. She was euthanized in 1997 due to complications from laminitis.
Pedigree notes
Sired by 1966 Jerome Handicap winner Bold and Brave (by Bold Ruler), Bold 'n Determined is inbred 5x5 to 1930 Derby Stakes winner and 1941 American champion sire Blenheim II. She is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Timeforaturn (by Best Turn), dam of Grade 3 winner Judge Smells (by In Reality).
Pidi, the dam of Bold 'n Determined, never raced but is a half sister to multiple Argentine stakes winner Portogallo (by Run and Rule) and to La Tarantella (by Promised Land), dam of Puerto Rican stakes winner Holy Tella (by Holy War). The siblings' dam Perillante (by Nigromante) was a stakes winner in her native Argentina and was produced from the Alan Breck mare Perilla, whose full sister Parrandera is the second dam of Argentine Group 2 winner Bandera Real and Grade 3 winner Paraje.
