The best of four stakes winners produced from 1979 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Smartaire, Smart Angle was more precocious than her half brother Smarten (a good three-year-old pf 1979) and was good enough to earn a championship in the two-year-old filly division. She failed to train on at that level at 3 but was a fairly successful broodmare.

Connections
Foaled in Maryland, Smart Angle was bred and owned by Jim and Eleanor Ryan's Ryehill Farm. She was trained by Woody Stephens and was ridden by Sam Maple for most of her juvenile season; the only other jockey to ride her was Sam’s brother, Eddie Maple. After the Ryans divorced, Smart Angle became the property of Eleanor Ryan, who bred two foals in her own name and a third, Special Gift, in partnership with Spendthrift Farm. Smart Angle then passed to the ownership of Ross Valley Farm, which bred her next four foals before selling the mare to the partnership of Swettenham Stud, John T. L. Jones Jr., and Mrs. E. Stockwell. Mrs. Stockwell later dropped out of the ownership group, which at various times included Chris Smith Bloodstock, John Magnier, Ron Con Ltd., Orpendale, and Pacelco SA. Smart Angle died in 2001.
