Carson City (USA)

April 4, 1987 – December 24, 2004

Mr. Prospector (USA) x Blushing Promise (USA), by Blushing Groom (FR)

Family 4-r

On paper, Carson City was just another nice sprinter when he retired to stud. He was also a little on the small side, although well-made. Thus, he didn't attract much attention as a new stallion. By the time he died at the regrettably early age of 17, it was a different story as he had earned recognition as a consistent source of quality speed. Like both his sire and his broodmare sire, he has also proven a good sire of producing daughters, and his male line is being continued by his son City Zip.

Race record

15 starts, 6 wins, 2 seconds, 0 third, US$306,240

1989:
  • Won Sapling Stakes (USA-II, 6FD, Monmouth)
  • 2nd Tyro Stakes (USA-L, 5.5FD, Monmouth)

1990:
  • Won Fall Highweight Handicap (USA-II, 6FD, Belmont)
  • Won Boojum Handicap (USA-III, 6FD, Belmont)

As an individual

A chestnut, Carson City stood 15.2-1/2 hands. He was muscular and compact with strong hindquarters and an excellent hind leg.

As a stallion

Carson City reached sixth on the American general sire list in 2003 and ninth in 2001. He was also ninth on the American broodmare sire list in 2011 and 10th in 2006 and 2012. According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Carson City sired 680 winners (64.3%) and 94 stakes winners (8.9%) from 1057 named foals; The Blood-Horse credits Carson City with 100 stakes winners (9.5%). Carson City is a Brilliant/Intermediate chef-de-race in the Roman dosage system.

Fun facts
  • In American geography, Carson City is the capital of the state of Nevada, a position it has held since the state entered the Union in 1864. Named for the famous frontiersman Kit Carson, the city was founded as a stopover for California-bound emigrants but became an important population center of the Utah Territory during the 1859 Comstock Lode silver rush.
  • Carson City was among the horses “started” by the noted horseman Monty Roberts, who gained fame for his “natural horsemanship” method of using equine body language to communicate with and train horses.
