A beautifully bred filly, Flute lived up to her classic bloodlines with a Classic victory of her own. She added the historic Alabama Stakes (USA-G1) at the Saratoga meeting, but a second in the Beldame Stakes (USA-G1) and a clunker in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (USA-G1) ended her hopes for the 3-year-old filly championship, which was eventually claimed by top sprinter Xtra Heat in a wide-open division. She has produced only one stakes winner, but her genetic legacy is still unfolding as she already has four stakes-producing daughters.

Fun facts
- Flute was nearly excluded from the Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1) because of lack of earnings to make the maximum allowed field of 14. Her fate was not determined until the day entries for the race closed, May 1, when Scoop was withdrawn due to a minor illness. Flute ended up facing 12 rivals due to the late scratch of Raging Fever.
- A flute is a reedless wind instrument that produces music from having a stream of air directed across a hole in the instrument. Flutes are believed to be the oldest musical instruments still in widespread use in the modern era and have been found in reliably dated sites over 40,000 years old.
