An exceptionally powerful and mature-looking juvenile, Gilded Time ran to his looks in the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1), capping an undefeated season and earning the American championship for his division. He spent most of his 3-year-old season on the sidelines due to a foot injury but came back in the fall to run a strong third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (USA-G1), his first outing off a year's layoff. He was a useful stallion who sired Grade/Group 1 winners in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and the United States.

As an individual

He remained an energetic horse with a keen interest in everything around him well into old age.

Fun facts
- Gilded Time was the colt Darrell Vienna was after on behalf of his clients when he went to the 1992 OBS sale of 2-year-olds in training, but the trainer found that he had to leave before the colt came into the ring. Asking veteran bloodstock agent Dennis Lynch to deputize for him, Vienna told him that his limit was US$80,000—the exact amount that Gilded Time actually sold for.
- Vienna first realized he had an exceptionally talented animal on his hands when Gilded Time began equaling or outworking seasoned older stakes horses while still an unraced 2-year-old—among them Sunny Blossom, then the holder of the 6-furlong track record of 1:07-1/5 at Santa Anita.
- Aside from his success as a horse trainer, Vienna is also a poet and short-story writer whose work has appeared in literary magazines. Now retired from the track, he is currently a prominent lawyer specializing in equine law.
