After he broke his maiden in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1), the sky seemed to be the limit for Good Magic, who as a son of Curlin had every reason to expect to improve as a 3-year-old. He ran well in his second season but was thwarted in his primary spring target, the Kentucky Derby (USA-G1), by the rapidly rising Justify, who went on to become the thirteenth winner of the American Triple Crown. Nonetheless, he nailed down a second Grade 1 win in the Haskell Invitational Stakes (USA-G1) before retiring following an uncharacteristically poor run in the Travers Stakes (USA-G1). Good Magic got his stud career off to an excellent start by siring 2022 Champagne Stakes (USA-G1) winner Blazing Sevens and 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage in his first crop.
