Henrythenavigator had a “could be anything” pedigree. What he turned out to be was a high-class miler, the winner of two European Classics at the distance as well as two other Group 1 events. A second to Raven’s Pass in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1) (run that year on a synthetic surface at Santa Anita) suggested that he actually might have stayed somewhat better than his race record up to that point suggested, but the point was moot as he was retired immediately afterward. He got off to a quick start at stud, getting two juvenile Group 1 winners in his first crop, but was unable to sustain his initial promise.

Fun facts
- Henry the Navigator, a prince of Portugal, was the primary sponsor for Portuguese voyages of discovery during the mid-fifteenth century CE. Explorations carried out under his patronage greatly expanded European knowledge of the African coast; introduced a new type of light, maneuverable vessel, the caravel, that could sail against prevailing winds and was capable of both transatlantic voyages and coastal exploration; and helped discover the major wind patterns of the Atlantic Ocean. Henry also donated houses to what would later become the University of Lisbon for the teaching of the sciences.
- Henrythenavigator was the first freshman sire of 2012 to be credited with a Grade/Group 1 winner when his son Pedro the Great won the Phoenix Stakes (IRE-G1) on August 12, 2012.
