Today is the birthday of a horse who was a champion, yet is best known for a race he lost under highly unusual circumstances. He definitely racked up the frequent flyer miles as he raced in Canada and the United States before standing in Maryland, Ireland, France and Japan. Fortunately for him, he is not known by his original registered name of "Alvan T." Who is he, and what is the race he is remembered for losing?

I visited him in mid-June 1968, shortly after he arrived at his owner's Runnymede Farm in North Hampton NH. I took a lot of pictures of him (35mm colored slides) which unfortunately have long since disappeared. In my teens I'd watched his sire race on early TV which helped shape my enthusiasm for the sport. It was exciting and redeeming to see his son flash the ability to race at the highest level, unlike most of the get of my earlier racing hero, Citation. Thanks for the memories.
