Java Gold was one of the best colts from a vintage 1984 American foal crop, and many New York racing fans were adamant that he should have been champion 3-year-old male after defeating Classic winners Alysheba and Bet Twice in the Travers Stakes (USA-G1) and defeating older males in the Marlboro Invitational Handicap (USA-G1) and Whitney Stakes (USA-G1). Java Gold did not compete in the Triple Crown series or in the Breeders' Cup, however, and Alysheba's brilliant Breeders' Cup Classic (USA-G1) effort in running the older Ferdinand to the slimmest of noses was probably the deciding factor. Java Gold finished his 3-year-old season with a second to Creme Fraiche in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (USA-G1), a race in which he sustained a fractured coffin bone in his right forefoot. He was unable to come back at age 4 as planned and was not successful overall at stud although he did get a couple of outstanding runners.

Pedigree notes
Java Gold is inbred 3x5 to two-time American champion sire and eight-time American champion broodmare sire Princequillo. One of only three named foals produced from Javamine, he is a half brother to 1985 Doncaster Cup (ENG-G3) winner Spicy Story (by Blushing Groom).
Javamine herself was a multiple Grade 2 winner on turf and is a half sister to Ivory Dawn (by Sir Ivor), dam of 1987 Irish champion sprinter Bluebird (by Storm Bird), second dam of three stakes winners and third dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Gamble's Ghost. Javamine is also a half sister to stakes-placed Veridian (by Nijinsky II's son Green Dancer), dam of restricted stakes winner Special Deputy (by Silver Deputy) and second dam of two stakes winners.
Javamine was produced from Dusky Evening (by Tim Tam x Home by Dark, by Hill Prince), whose full sister Timely Tammy is the second dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Timely Writer and 1987 Santa Anita Oaks (USA-G1) winner Timely Assertion.
