Mr. Prospector (USA) x Coup de Folie (USA), by Halo (USA)
Family 2-d
Easily the best French-raced juvenile of his year, Machiavellian was probably unlucky not to win the classic Two Thousand Guineas (ENG-G1) as a 3-year-old, getting a rough trip behind winner Tirol. He was not the same in two starts following that experience and was retired. At stud, he became the leading sire for the Mr. Prospector male line in Europe. Unfortunately, he began suffering a loss of fertility at age 15 and died at the relatively young age of 17.

French champion 2-year-old male (1989)
As an individual
A handsome bay horse with a good shoulder and the typically strong Mr. Prospector hindquarters and hind leg, Machiavellian was strong and muscular. As a racehorse, he had excellent acceleration. He stood 15.3 hands.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Machiavellian sired 459 winners (60.5%) and 71 stakes winners (9.4%) from 759 named foals. The Blood-Horse credits him with 78 stakes winners (10.3%). Machiavellian had a strong affinity for mares returning his ancestress Almahmoud in their pedigrees, particularly through Northern Dancer. Like his sire, he was able to get runners that stayed better than he himself did and was represented by Group 1 winners up to 4000 meters (about 2½ miles).

Foaled in Kentucky, Machiavellian was bred by the Niarchos' family's Flaxman Holdings Ltd. and raced in the colors of Stavros Niarchos. He was trained by François Boutin. He entered stud in 1991 at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket, England, where he remained for his entire stud career. The stallion was forced to miss most of the 2004 breeding season due to laminitis, which forced his humane destruction in July of that year.
