Orpen showed significant ability as a 2-year-old but did not train on. A shuttle sire throughout his stallion career, he sired champions in eight countries and was at his best in Argentina, where he was both a champion sire and a champion broodmare sire.

Foaled in Kentucky, Orpen was bred by Katom Ltd. Purchased for US$525,000 from the Keeneland November mixed sale by the British Bloodstock Agency Ireland, he was owned by Susan Magnier and was trained by Aidan O’Brien. He entered stud at Coolmore Ireland in 2000, shuttling to Coolmore Australia in 2000-2003. He was leased by Argentine breeder Jose DeCamargo in 2004 and stood the 2004-2006 Southern Hemisphere seasons at Haras Arroya de Luna. DeCamargo later partnered with Haras La Providencia to buy Orpen from Coolmore; after that, Orpen stood in Argentina at Haras Carampagne as the property of a syndicate. In 2009, Orpen moved to Haras du Thenney, France, for the Northern Hemisphere seasons, and continued to shuttle to France for the remainder of his life. The stallion died of complications of colic in Argentina on January 26, 2021.
